The bodies were then transferred into hearses from the Norwegian ship, Siem Pilot.

The victims are among as many as 240 people believed to have lost their lives in two shipwrecks off Libya when attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

A spokesperson for UN refugee agency said that the rubber dinghies they were travelling in had capsized on Wednesday in heavy seas shortly after leaving Libya.

UNHCR reports the deaths brought this year’s toll to more than 4,220 migrants dead or missing in risky Mediterranean crossings, the highest count on record.

The agency emphasised that the number of dead was an estimate.
