Eritreans will claim 180,000 euros from Veldhoven municipality.
The organization of the Forbidden Eritrean Conference last month wants the costs incurred on the municipality of Veldhoven. That amounts to at least 180,000 euros, declares their lawyer. The mayor of Veldhoven forbade the meeting after a demonstration of protesters had taken place for the Koningshof conference center.
“The conference itself has cost 180,000 euros,” says Bart-Jan Walraven, the Eritrean lawyer. “People have to rebook because they could not stay in Koningshof. There were 540 people from all over Europe who stayed overnight and plane tickets Had bought.”
The organization is calculating what the total cost has been exactly. “All of these costs we will pay to the municipality,” Walraven said. “If I had been to Veldhoven, I would have been in close consultation with someone of liability insurance. We will prosecute to the State Council.” The municipality of Veldhoven does not want to comment on the statements of lawyer Walraven. However, a spokeswoman indicates that the municipality itself has also incurred costs around the Eritrean conference. Legal advice has been obtained, additional staff costs were incurred and the municipality took care of bus transportation to remove hundreds of participants after the conference was terminated. The municipality now charges these costs and will then see who should pay. At present, the municipality does not yet want to tell the story of another party.
