Mariam D’arit – A sacred site just outside the centre of Keren, has a BaoBab tree which holds a statue of the black Madonna, St Mary, within it.
The ground is perceived to be holy and thus blessed, thousands of pilgrims come to pray at the site on the day and the day and night before.
The statue of the black Madonna only comes out on May 29th of every year. Thrice times she circumnavigates the tree, followed by the tābōt, priests, nuns, praying mothers, drummers, civil servants and other important figures in local society.
Its quite a moving moment to experience – whatever your religious affiliations may or may not be, being present at the site, during this ritual, will surely leave an impression on you.
The sincerity in which the mothers pray during the all night vigil, when recalled, gives me goose bumps and makes my heart swell. The power of this hours long collective prayer, singing, praise giving and pleading through song creates a sublime atmosphere, all of this in dim candle light under the ancient omnipotent Baobab tree.
Be warned ! The constant and unsteady movement of my shoddy footage may nauseate you..
Apart from that – Enjoy.
