Eritrean news: Eritrea-Asmara, 9 May 2010 – The Fred Hollows Inter Ocular Lens Laboratory has introduced new and modern machineries to manufacture flexible lens, in addition to the inflexible lenses it previously produced, Mr. Mengisteab Tewoldeberhane, manger of the laboratory stated.
In an interview with ERINA, Mr. Mengisteab said that the flexible lenses would enable patients to go home immediately after surgery.
Pointing out that Fred Hollows is the only one of its kind in Africa, Mr. Mengisteab said that it has produced about 200,000 lenses and exported about 97% of its products having satisfied local demand. He went on to add that their products have high demand in Asian countries.
Reports disclosed that the Laboratory has introduced new equipments which can produce eye drop medicine for the first time in Eritrea, and would produce four types of eye medications that were found out to be in high demand in the country in the second half of this year.
Eng. Daniel Kiflai, head of productions at the Laboratory, stated that the quality of the products meet international standards.
Furthermore, Mr. Mengisteab said that the Laboratory provides various trainings to upgrade the skills of its manpower and has created employment opportunity for over 60 nationals.
