The World Health Organization (WHO) in Eritrea is inviting applications from
suitably qualified National candidate for 2 (TWO) positions of National Surveillance Officers (SO):
Title of Post: NPO/Surveillance
Duration: 1 Year Fixed Term
Salary Grade Level: NOC (UN salary scale Eritrea)
Major Duties:
Under the direct supervision of the WHO Representative in the Country, Programmatic and Orientation from the Director of the Division of Disease Prevention and Control in the Regional Office the incumbent will undertake the following tasks:
1. Provide Technical assistance to Ministry of Health and other actors in the
planning implementation, monitoring and evaluation of an effective Acute
Flask Paralysis (AFP) Surveillance as well as surveillance of other vaccine
preventable diseases, within the context of Integrated Disease Surveillance.
2. Contribute to the training of Health Personnel, at all levels of the Health System, in relevant aspects of (Expanded Programme Immunization (EPI) and Disease Surveillance.
3. Provide technical support to the Ministry of Health and other relevant authorities to establish/maintains monitoring systems for EPI activities, as well as vaccine preventable diseases.
4. Prepare weekly, monthly quarterly and annual progress reports of activities completed
5. Provide technical support for identification, documentation and dissemination of best practice in EPI
6. Promote operational research on various aspects of the Expanded programme on Immunization and surveillance and assist national authorities in the development and implementation of such projects.
7. Provide technical support to the Ministry of Health in fostering partnership for resource mobilization for the programme.
8. Perform other duties as required.
Functional Skills and Knowledge:
• Technical expertise in Public Health, Epidemiology, and Immunization;
• Ability to work effectively with colleagues in a multi-cultural environment
and to train others;
• Ability to review and analyze data design studies, monitor progress and to
present results including the writing of concise reports;
• Knowledge of public health/community health issues relating to
surveillance.
Education (Qualifications)
Essential: – Master Degree in Medicine from a recognized University with
Post Graduate Degree and training in Public Health or Epidemiology.
Desirable: – Good knowledge and ability to use Computer Software for Word
Processing, Spreadsheets and basic Epidemiological and Statistical
Analysis
- Excellent computer skills, good knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs, works well with Spreadsheets, Databases; should be able to use EPI Info
Experience: At least 5 years progressive working experience in Public Health at National Level
Language: Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. A working
knowledge of other WHO official language will be an advantage.
National Service: Candidate must provide evidence of discharge/release from
National Service.
